How Long Does It Take to Become PADI Open Water Diver - Get YOUR Certification at Bespoke Scuba – Essex’s and Londons Premier 5* IDC PADI Centre.
If you're thinking about learning to scuba dive in Essex, Kent or London, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: how long does it take to get certified?
With Bespoke Scuba Diving, the answer is refreshingly straightforward — and flexible enough to fit around work and family life.
We Teach The PADI Open Water Diver Course (With Dry Suit Speciality Included)
The most popular beginner qualification is the PADI Open Water Diver course. At Bespoke Scuba Diving, this course also includes the Dry Suit Speciality, which is ideal for UK diving conditions.

So, how long does it actually take?
The course is structured in three clear stages:
1️⃣ PADI eLearning (Theory – Self-Paced)
You complete your theory online before getting into the water.
Done at home
Work at your own pace
Typically completed over several evenings
Because this is self-paced, some students finish it in a few days, while others spread it out over a couple of weeks. There is a second, much smaller piece of e-learning for the Dry Suit Speciality.
2️⃣ Pool / Confined Water Training
Next, you’ll complete your in-water skills training in a controlled pool environment.
These sessions are usually scheduled on Wednesday evenings, making them easy to fit around a standard work schedule.
Most students complete their pool training across five to six consecutive evenings, depending on scheduling. We avoid intensive pool sessions - learning drops off sharply after an hour or so and our focus is on making good divers.
3️⃣ Open Water Training Weekend
Your qualifying dives take place over one dedicated training weekend at an inland dive site.
👉 See upcoming training weekends here
During this weekend, you’ll complete:
Four open water training dives
Dry suit qualification dive
This is where you transition from training to becoming a certified diver actually happens.
Typical Timeframe from Start to Certification
For most students, the full process takes:
Around 5–7 weeks – We run Bespoke options where this can be much quicker.
That usually looks like:
Week 1–5 (6): Complete eLearning + evening pool sessions
Weekend: Open water training dives
Certification issued after successful completion
Because training weekends run regularly throughout the year, you can choose a date that works for you and plan your pool sessions around it.
